Atlanta (May 2016) – Richard T. Timmer, Ph.D., has joined Morris, Manning & Martin, LLP (MMM) as a patent agent in the firm’s Buckhead office. Timmer’s career includes more than 25 years in the chemical and life sciences industries. He will assist the firm’s Intellectual Property Practice and will work closely with MMM’s nationally-recognized Technology Practice.

Dr. Timmer brings a unique depth and breadth of experience to working with clients who are commercializing innovative technology. He spent more than 15 years preparing and prosecuting patent applications with two national law firms, and managing patent portfolios for biotechnology startups and multinational pharmaceutical companies.

“It’s great to have Richard on board,” said John Yates, who chairs the firm’s Tech group. “We really appreciate that he has worked for biotechnology startups, including leading and supporting investment rounds.”

Dr. Timmer’s first-hand business experience in the startup environment includes holding key management roles in multiple life science companies in the U.S. and Canada. “I hope that what I learned about funding these companies, recruiting and working with boards of directors, and aligning business objectives with patent portfolios will help MMM’s clients meet their goals,” he said.

His background also includes scouting and evaluating technologies for in- and out-licensing of biopharmaceutical assets, and negotiating multiple licensing and research collaboration agreements. He has experience with various aspects of FDA-regulated products, including designing and leading early stage drug development programs through Phase I clinical studies.

While a faculty member in the Department of Physiology of the Emory University School of Medicine, his research focused on structure-function relationships in membrane transport proteins. He is an inventor of 12 issued U.S. patents pertaining to novel small molecule compounds useful as therapeutic agents in inflammatory disease and cancer.
